The Complete Guide to Airline Miles & Hotel Points 2026
Everything you need to know about earning, transferring, and redeeming travel rewards.
Why Points & Miles Matter
Most people leave enormous value on the table every year — not by spending more, but simply by not optimizing how they're rewarded for spending they already do.
Here's the core case: a round-trip business class flight to Europe costs $4,000–$8,000 in cash. With the right points strategy — earned largely through credit card sign-up bonuses and everyday spending — the same seat can be booked for under $200 in taxes and fees.
That's not a loophole or a trick. It's a system that airlines and hotels deliberately created to build loyalty — and the best travelers know exactly how to use it.
Real-World Example
The Major Points Currencies
These four "bank currencies" are the most powerful because you can transfer them to multiple airlines and hotels — giving you flexibility to always pick the best deal.
Chase Ultimate Rewards
Best all-around transferable currency
Best Transfer Partners
Transfers are instant to most partners. Hyatt is the crown jewel — Chase UR → Hyatt is arguably the single best transfer ratio in all of points & miles. Transfers at 1:1.
Amex Membership Rewards
Best for premium international awards
Best Transfer Partners
Transfer to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer for some of the best first-class redemptions on the planet. Singapore Suites to Asia for 85,000 KrisFlyer miles round-trip. Transfers at 1:1.
Capital One Miles
Underrated with excellent partner access
Best Transfer Partners
Turkish Miles&Smiles offers incredible Star Alliance redemptions — fly United business class to Europe for 45,000 miles round-trip (vs. 70,000 direct). Transfers at 1:1.
Citi ThankYou Points
Great for budget-conscious redemptions
Best Transfer Partners
Citi's Turkish Airlines partnership mirrors Capital One's — access to Star Alliance at bargain rates. Avianca LifeMiles is excellent for Star Alliance redemptions with no fuel surcharges. Most transfers at 1:1.
Best Airline Programs
Values are approximate cents-per-mile (CPM) based on typical redemptions. Business/first class redemptions often yield 2–5× higher value.
| Airline | Program | Avg. Value |
|---|---|---|
| United | MileagePlus | ~1.2¢ |
| Delta | SkyMiles | ~1.1¢ |
| American | AAdvantage | ~1.4¢ |
| Southwest | Rapid Rewards | ~1.5¢ |
| Alaska | Mileage Plan | ~1.8¢ |
| British Airways | Avios | ~1.8¢ |
Alaska Mileage Plan
Consistently rated the highest value program. The Cathay Pacific first-class redemption (50,000 Alaska miles one-way to Asia) is legendary among points enthusiasts.
Southwest Companion Pass
Earn 135,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year and bring a companion on every flight for free for the rest of that year and all of next year. Worth thousands.
British Airways Avios
Avios is distance-based: short flights under 650 miles cost just 4,500–7,500 Avios. Perfect for short domestic hops on American or short-haul European flights.
Best Hotel Programs
Hotel points tend to depreciate faster than airline miles, but the top programs still offer exceptional value — especially at luxury properties.
| Program | Avg. Points Value |
|---|---|
| World of Hyatt Hyatt Hotels & Resorts | ~2.1¢ |
| Marriott Bonvoy Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, W | ~0.7¢ |
| Hilton Honors Hilton, Conrad, Waldorf Astoria | ~0.5¢ |
| IHG One Rewards IHG, InterContinental, Kimpton, Six Senses | ~0.8¢ |
Why World of Hyatt Wins
Hyatt's fixed award chart means you always know what you're paying — dynamic pricing has eroded the value of most competing programs. The Park Hyatt New York costs 30,000 points/night vs. $1,000+ cash (~3.3¢/point). The Maldives properties, listed below in Sweet Spots, are legendary for value. And because Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers 1:1 to Hyatt, you can easily accumulate points through everyday credit card spending.
5 Incredible Sweet Spots
These are specific, bookable redemptions that consistently deliver exceptional value — often 3–7¢ per point or more.

How to Earn More Miles Faster
Welcome Bonuses First
A single credit card welcome bonus (60,000–100,000 points) can be worth more than 2 years of everyday spending. Prioritize new cards over optimizing spend on existing ones.
Use Category Bonuses
Amex Gold earns 4x at restaurants and grocery stores. Chase Sapphire Reserve earns 3x on travel and dining. Ink Business Cash earns 5x at office supply stores. Stack the right card for each category.
Shopping Portals
Every major airline and Chase/Amex have online shopping portals. Click through before buying at retailers like Nike, Apple, or Gap and earn 3–20x extra miles per dollar on top of your card rewards.
Dining Programs
Register your credit card with airline dining programs (United MileagePlus Dining, Delta SkyMiles Dining, etc.) and earn 3–5 miles per dollar at registered restaurants — automatically on top of your card rewards.
Pay Bills & Rent with Points Cards
Use services like Plastiq or your card's bill pay to earn points on rent, utility bills, and other expenses that don't normally accept credit cards. Even at a 2x card, this can add 10,000+ points/year.
Which Card Should You Get First?
The best first travel card depends on your spending patterns and travel goals. Use this quick guide to find your match.
You want maximum flexibility
You travel multiple airlines and want to choose the best deal each time
Chase Sapphire Preferred
95/yr annual fee, 3x dining/2x travel, 60,000–80,000 point welcome bonus. Transfers to 14 partners including Hyatt, United, Southwest. Best all-around first card.
You spend a lot on food & dining
Restaurants and groceries are your biggest spending categories
American Express Gold Card
$250/yr, 4x restaurants, 4x US supermarkets (up to $25k/yr), 3x flights. Up to $240 in annual dining credits effectively offset the fee. Transfers to airlines.
You fly domestically most
Most of your trips are domestic, and you value flexibility over premium cabins
Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus
$69/yr, 2x Southwest purchases. Accumulate toward the Companion Pass — the most valuable perk in domestic travel. Earn 135k points across two SW cards' welcome bonuses.
You want luxury travel & lounge access
Premium perks, lounge access, and high-value credits justify a premium fee
Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve
$550–$695/yr. Access to Centurion Lounges (Amex) or Priority Pass (both). Up to $300–$695 in annual travel credits offset the fee for frequent travelers. Massive welcome bonuses.
General Rule: Start with Chase
Chase enforces a "5/24 rule" — if you've opened 5+ credit cards in the past 24 months, Chase will deny new applications. This means you should generally apply for Chase cards first, before moving to Amex or Capital One. Once you have a Sapphire and one or two Ink business cards, you can diversify to other issuers freely.
